Support the Olympics
This is an Email I just received. Thought it was an incredible story. USA!
When Lopez Lomong was six years old, he was the self-described “happiest kid in Sudan,” but that all changed one Sunday when an armed militia abducted him as he attended mass with his parents. Lopez was held captive for three weeks until he escaped by running as fast and far as he could. Lopez spent the next ten years in a refugee camp where a poignant essay he wrote landed him with an American foster family. Adapting to life in the United States wasn’t always easy, so running became his refuge once again. And he ran his way right onto Team USA in time to compete at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Lopez revels in every opportunity to set foot on the field of play. He sees each step as another chance to show his appreciation for those who have helped him along the way, in both Sudan and the U.S. Without the support of the U.S. Olympic Committee, Lopez never would have been able to become an Olympic athlete. Today, while Lopez continues his training, he also serves as an ambassador for human rights and the people of Sudan. Because of his inspiring journey both on and off the field, Lopez Lomong was nominated by fellow Team USA members to be the flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing. By supporting America’s athletes like Lopez Lomong, you are creating role models and beacons of hope for people all over this country, and even throughout the world. Join us in this noble cause by making a gift today to help tomorrow’s role models, and you can make twice the impact. Thanks to the support of the Olympic and Paralympic sponsor, Visa, whatever you give right now will be doubled from their sponsorship, up to a maximum of $500,000, as long as we receive it by July 31st, 2010. Please show your support for America’s Olympic Team during this patriotic time of the year. Sincerely, Jeffery Hunt Annual Fund Director United States Olympic Committee |
